Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Apex — what it is, how it works, and how to get started.
What is Apex?
Apex is an AI operating system — a fully autonomous agent that works like you, thinks like you, and executes real work on your behalf. Unlike chatbots that only respond or automation tools that only follow rules, Apex acts: handling communications, making decisions, and completing tasks 24/7.
How is Apex different from ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a conversational AI that responds to prompts. Apex is an autonomous agent that takes action. ChatGPT waits for you to ask; Apex proactively manages your email, calendar, and tasks without being prompted. It also has persistent memory that compounds over time, learning your preferences and patterns.
How is Apex different from Zapier or Make?
Zapier and Make are automation tools that execute pre-defined workflows (if X, then Y). Apex is an AI agent that reasons about context and decides what to do. Automation tools need you to build every workflow manually and break when exceptions occur. Apex adapts to new situations because it understands, not just follows rules.
What can Apex actually do?
Apex handles communications (email triage, drafting responses, sending messages), manages your calendar (scheduling, protecting focus time), monitors your business (KPI tracking, alerts), executes tasks (follow-ups, research, content creation), and learns your preferences to act more autonomously over time.
Is Apex self-hosted?
Yes. Apex runs on your infrastructure, meaning your data never leaves your control. This is core to the architecture — you own everything, and nothing is shared with external services beyond the AI models you choose to use.
Do I own everything built with Apex?
Yes. 100% IP ownership. Everything built on Apex — customizations, integrations, data, configurations — belongs to you. The platform is MIT licensed.
What tools does Apex integrate with?
Apex integrates with Slack, Gmail, Outlook, Google Calendar, WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage (via BlueBubbles), Notion, Google Drive, HubSpot, Salesforce, Vapi (voice), and any service with an API. The Gateway architecture makes adding new integrations straightforward.
What is "compounding context"?
Compounding context is Apex's ability to accumulate knowledge about you over time — your communication style, priorities, relationships, decisions, and preferences. Unlike tools that reset with each session, Apex remembers and gets better the longer you use it.
Can Apex make decisions without my approval?
You control the level of autonomy. Apex can draft and wait for approval, or act independently within guardrails you set. Most users start with approval-required mode and gradually expand autonomy as trust builds.
Is my data secure?
Yes. Apex is self-hosted, meaning data stays on your infrastructure. The Security layer includes encryption, 1Password integration for credentials, granular permissions, and audit logs for every action. You control what Apex can access.
Who built Apex?
Apex was created by Dan Martell as his personal digital twin — an AI to handle the operational load of running multiple businesses. It's built on 88,000+ lines of custom code and is now available to other founders who want the same capability.
How do I get access?
Apex is currently in private beta. Join the waitlist for early access. Referrals move you up the list.
